Sensing Energy – Beginners

Energy healing is a concept that seems to plant many seeds of misinterpretation. Thanks to pop culture we have some pretty grandiose ideas for what energy healing is or could be. A wizard’s wand sending big blue swaths of firefly light that penetrates the chest of the hero, readying her to go kill the dragon. As epic as that would be, magick in movies and TV are visually pumped up for theatrics. In reality, it is more accurately equated to Popeye eating a can of spinach and having super-muscles.

We will dive into the nuance of energy philosophy in subsequent posts. Today I am here to empower you to start working on your subtle energy sense right away.

A few things to know, energy flows in spiral or vibrations. It’s how we hear sound, how light bounces off of things to reflect what we perceive as color, it is our life force, and a signature in everything that is. Subtle energy is exactly this, subtle. It can take some practice and experimenting to see what methods gel with your energy best, don’t give up on your first try.

A Note: Give thanks. You don’t have to believe in any God to give thanks to the net of being which weaves us all together. Just give thanks to existence, Source, whatever you call it, and surrender expectation.

 

BEFORE BASIC ENERGY WORK:

Like any channel for electricity, we’ve got to ground. There are numerous methods to do this and I encourage you to find one that works best for you. For now, I’ve got an easy one for you.

 

-Sit or stand with a straight back.

-Close your eyes and take 3 deep breaths. With the inhale, our stomach and into our chest fills like a balloon, from bottom to top. Hold. 2. 3. Our exhale expels air from the top of our chest to the bottom of our belly.

-Imagine a small ball of red light in your pelvis. As you breathe in the spinning red light grows larger, you are connected by this light to the Earth beneath you. Every exhale sends what doesn’t serve you into the ground.

-Do this until you can picture the luminous ball as light spilling out of you. It might be a very dense color, this is also fine as long as it fills you.

 

*A note on visualizing: Just imagine it, don’t get too attached to what it should look like or how realistic it should seem. Picture, imagine, state it internally as it is. Whatever feels right to you.

 

YOUR HANDS:

Yes, we can feel energy through our body, that is why someone who makes you nervous might make your stomach churn, or perhaps you just feel unsettled. To better understand how our body interacts with energy we are going to start with the hands. The hands are extensions of the heart chakra, which makes sense considering they protrude out of our torso. When in balance we love, we tousle hair, we cook, we create with our hands. When out of balance we might hurt, abuse, or destroy with the same hands. Our goal here is to bring balance and to find something tangible for you. They are a fundamental spiritual tool.

 

-Rub your hands together for a few seconds. Feel them pressing against one another. Focus on what it feels like

-Slowly pull your hands apart about 6”-8”.

-Slowly bring your hands together. Notice any changes in feeling like warmth or tingliness. Imagining a light moving in a swirl can help.

 

CRYSTALS/GEMSTONES:

Grab at least 3 stones that you like. I recommend at least one quartz. Amethyst, rose quartz, or another variation is fine. The other stones could be other quartz, low to high quality gemstones, or even a seashell.

 

-Lay your stones in front of you so that they’re at least 4” apart.

-Rub your hands together and use your non-dominant hand to hover just above the first stone, then the second, then the third

-Take note of any changes in sensations in your hand. Close your eyes and hover over each stone.

 

CARDS:

While this can be done with a regular deck of cards, I find it is best if you have a tarot or oracle deck to work with.

 

-Take your deck and shuffle in your preferred method for as long as you like. Focus on your question.

What do I need to keep in mind today?

How can I be my best self?

What is blocking me from communicating with X coworker?

Where should I look for insight into X situation?

-When you’re ready, cut your deck with your non-dominant hand into 3 piles and restack in a different order. Spread them out in a line, overlapping one another. Or in a messy pile. Whichever feels better.

-Close your eyes and focus on the sensations in your palm and fingers while slowly moving your non-dominant hand over the cards in front of you. Note a warmth or tingling. Hone in on that card. I will usually pull it aside and compare the feeling with the rest of the pile to be sure.

-There may be another card. Listen to your intuition. Usually I only have 2 or 3 in a pull like this. 1 is completely sufficient. If a card jumps out when you’re shuffling, see what it is and how it feels.

 

OTHER OBJECTS:

From your own old wounds to pictures or antiques, try sensing the energies of different items. These are practices you can build on later.

 

TIP: Keep notes and practice frequently!
